From dripping to jetting in flow focusing microfluidics device

We focus on the different regimes observed in flow focusing devices (where the flow of a dispersed phase is focused by the flow of a continuous phase through a small channel). A dripping and jetting regime can be seen on the figure above where a flow of hexadecane is focused by a flow of pure glycerol. The radius of the nozzle is of 20 µm.We focus on the transition from dripping to regime. At one point the system moves from a dripping regime to a jetting regime. We are working on what triggered this transition..

High flow rate regime

At high flow rate, interesting feature can be seen : the jet is highly modulated and some black dots appear inside of the big drop formed at the end of the jet..

Those are droplets of the outer phase (glycerol) projected in the inner one (hexadecane). A set of pictures illustrating the formation of such droplets is presented below.
