This is from an oil and water emulsion (with SDS) prepared by Mike Popchuk. The image was produced using differential interference contrast microscopy by Eric Weeks. The image is about 25 microns across. This pattern only occured in one place on the slide, and the rest of the slide was extremely disordered. Another snapshot below shows the lower corner of this structure, along with some nearby droplets that are more typical of what was on the slide.

Note: for those unfamiliar with DIC microscopy, you should be aware that the three-dimensional appearance of the image is an illusion.
