This is a colloidal suspension of microgel particles at volume a fraction around 60%. The particles have a fluorescent shell. In the confocal the center of each particle appears black, allowing to distinguish each one of them, even in the concentrated regime. The extreme softness of the particles allows high diffusivity even at this high volume fraction.
