Materials research is widespread within Harvard, both in the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences as well as several departments within the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, such as Physics and Chemistry & Chemical Biology. Some of these broad interdisciplinary research activities are found in interdisciplinary research Centers, such as the Harvard Materials Research Science and Engineering Center (MRSEC). A traditional Engineering School would have a Department of Materials Science and Engineering, in which the Faculty Members treat Materials Science and Engineering as a discipline in their teaching and research. At Harvard, those Faculty members who treat Materials Science and Engineering as a discipline are informally called the Materials Science Group. Without department boundaries their research naturally becomes broadly interdisciplinary but still has the discipline of Materials Science and Engineering at its core. They are:
