Group Members (Alphabetical Listing)

1. Dr Mohamad Banaee, Postdoctoral Researcher

Mohamad received his MS and PhD in Physics from the University of British Columbia, Canada. His PhD was earned under Professor Jeff Young in photonic crystal microcavities. He has also carried out research in microstructure optical fibers and non-linear optics.

2. Yizhuo Chu, Graduate Student

Yizhuo received her B.S and M.S. degrees in Physics from Tsinghua University in China. She is currently a graduate student in Chemistry and Chemical Biology. Yizhuo is working on developing nanostructures for surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy.

3. Dr Ethan Schonbrun, Postdoctoral Researcher

Ethan received his undergraduate degree in Electrical Engineering from Northwestern University. He earned his PhD from the University of Colorado, Boulder under Prof Won Park. As part of his PhD work, he designed silicon-on-insulator (SOI) photonic crystal integrated optical devices and made some of the first experimental observations of negative refractive index for imaging and prism applications.

4. Dr Paul Steinvurzel, Postdoctoral Researcher

Paul received his undergraduate degree in Applied Physics from Columbia University. He carried out his PhD at the University of Sydney, Australia under Prof Ben Eggleton and Prof C. Martijn de Sterke. There, he performed research in solid core photonic bandgap fibers (PBGFs). This included work in PBGF gratings and higher order modes of PBGFs, experiments in using PBGF design to engineer waveguide dispersion for ultrafast nonlinear pulse propagation, and experimental demonstrations of PBGFs as tunable filters.

5. Kai Wang, Graduate Student

Kai received his Bachelor and Masters degrees in Electrical Engineering from Tsinghua University in China. He is currently a SEAS graduate student in Electrical Engineering. Kai is investigating optical forces from nanostructures.

6. Dr Tian Yang, Postdoctoral Researcher

Tian received his undergraduate degree in Electrical Engineering from Tsinghua University in China. He then moved to Los Angeles to attend graduate school at the University of Southern California. He carried out his PhD under Prof John O'Brien in photonic crystals, with an emphasis on photonic nanocavities embedded with quantum dots.

7. Yanshu Zou, Graduate Student

Yanshu received her undergraduate degree in Electrical Engineering from Peking University in China. She is currently a SEAS graduate student in Electrical Engineering. Yanshu has experience with numerical electromagnetic simulations and scanning probe microscopy. She is a qualified user of the Center for Nanoscale Systems (CNS) at Harvard.
